Democratic legitimacy by peformance

The Norwegian Research Council project, led by The University of Nordland, is studying the extent to which local political legitimacy is generated at the output side of the political system and the consequences for that process of more traditional input-based legitimacy.  By disentangling the concept of democratic legitimacy the project is investigating how local governments are legitimised not only through procedural democracy and participation, but also through the outputs of service delivery.

The project explores the sources of political legitimacy and how that legitimacy is related to both the procedure and performance of local government and to the conceptualisation of contemporary local democracy as well as to popular participation and involvement in governance and public management reform.
