Practising Photography in the Sciences

Dr. Kelley Wilder

This project emerged from my work on Henri Becquerel published in Histories of Observation (Chicago, 2011). In this book project I will interrogate what it means to ‘practise’ photography in the context of the sciences. Although the project refers naturally to the current interests in the history of science in practices in general, it also refers to the methods used in photographic conservation for teaching; namely the teaching of the tacit knowledge of analogue photographic processes. What does it mean to ‘practise photography’? How are photographic methods shaped, used and disseminated? How does the practice of photography alter the science in which it is embedded? In what ways are photographic and filmic methods similar or different? Although this book will not claim to answer all of these questions, it begins to address some of them.
