Dr Jenifer Chao

jennifer-chao

Dr Chao joined the Photographic History Research Centre as a honorary research associate in 2014; she also lectures part-time in the School of Humanities. She received her PhD in 2013 from the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis at University of Amsterdam. Before that, she completed a MA in English Literature (cum laude) from University of Amsterdam and a BA in International Studies from University of Washington, Seattle.

Her research is situated at the confluence of cultural analysis, in particular visual culture, and International Relations. It focuses on the diverse ways that politics and aesthetics converge – most often with oppositional intentions – to address issues such as identity, globalisation and terrorism. Her latest publication, “Oppositional Banality: Watching Ordinary Muslims in Little Mosque on the Prairie”, appeared in NECSUS: European Journal of Media Studies (Spring 2015).
