Design and New Product Development Research Group Overview
Design and New Product Development is a multidisciplinary research group. Working across all the schools of design within the Faculty, it embraces Product, Furniture and Interior Design; Fashion, Contour Fashion and Footwear; Design Crafts, and Social Dimensions of Design.
The group was formed to perform pioneering research – empirical, theoretical, collaborative and practical – in both established and emerging domains. Special research interests include:
- Additive manufacturing in design
- Design for industry
- Medical products and devices
- Innovations in packaging
- User informed design
- Retail, consumers and technologies
- Resource-efficient design
- Historical, cultural and future issues in design
Research group staff are:
Professor Peter Ford
Professor of Design and group co coordinator. Specialising in the role of design in industry and research into resource efficiency in design.
Professor James Woudhuysen
Professor of Forecasting and Innovation, specialising in economic, technological and social forecasting of innovation research.
Dr Lionel Dean
Senior Lecturer and designer specialising in additive manufacture in design research.
Dr Tim Martin
Specialising in Architecture and Culture.
Dr Robert CC Chen
Principal Lecturer, specialising in Industrial Design and Orthopaedic Footwear Technology research.
Senior Research Fellow/National Teacher Fellow. Manager of the Usability Lab specialising in consumer behaviour (psycho-physiological) analysis, marketing, e-commerce and virtual world’s research.
Dr Christine Boydell
Design historian specialising in the history of Fashion and Textiles.
Dr Eujin Pei
Specialising in user centred design and additive manufacturing in design research.
Senior Lecturer, specialising in user centred design research.
Principal Lecturer. Specialising in Fashion.
Principal Lecturer with research interests in pedagogy and CAD in Fashion.
Senior Lecturer, specialising in Design Crafts research, with particular interest in refractory mould making for casting and kiln forming glass in a contemporary and a historic context.
