Introduction to Research

Research in the Faculty of Humanities at DMU is dynamic and forward looking, blending traditional scholarly disciplines of critical enquiry and analysis with practice-based research and creativity.  Cutting-edge technology plays a key role in much of the research done in the Faculty.

Key areas of research are in English (including textual studies, Renaissance literature, modernism, poetry, adaptation studies), History (including Sports History), Music Technology, Drama, Dance, Film Studies, Online Writing, Media and Discourse, and Technology in Culture.

Emerging research areas include Education Studies and Journalism. The Faculty is home to home to four specialised Research Centres in Textual Studies, Adaptation Studies, Sports History and Culture, and Music, Technology and Innovation.

The Faculty achieved some impressive results in the recent 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, which measures the quality of research produced in all UK universities. Notably, English were ranked 9th  in the Times Higher Education listing and Film and Media were ranked 15th, a testimony to the significant proportion of world-leading research in these areas.

Dance and Drama, and the Centre for Music, Technology and Innovation was also judged to have significant world-leading research, and History’s international standing was once again confirmed.

There are regular research seminars organised by research Centres and Groups, and those are complemented by Faculty-wide events, such as the highly successful annual Cultural Exchanges Festival which presents talks, interviews and performances by leading national and international figures in the Arts and Humanities.
