Tuition Fees

Tuition Fees and Costs

Tuition fees and continuation fees cover the cost of your registration, supervision, assessment and access to university facilities such as the library and faculty equipment/resources.  There is some price band variability in tuition fees so ensure you check this before accepting your place.  When you accept the offer of a place for a research degree you are accepting responsibility for the payment of tuition fees and continuation fees until you submit the examinable thesis.  This is also the case if you are being sponsored and for some reason your sponsor fails to pay.   All fees are subject to an annual inflationary increase.

Tuition Fee and Continuation Fee Charges

You will be charged an annual tuition fee and subsequent continuation fee for each year of enrolled study as outlined below.  There is normally an annual inflationary increase in fees.

Additional Costs

In addition to tuition fees and continuation fees, you will also need to meet your living costs including accommodation and other related costs such as food and household goods, travel and clothing etc.

There may also be costs associated with the research programme such as stationery, additional books, travel and field trip expenses.

It is important to have sufficient funding in place to meet the tuition fees, continuation fees and living costs.  The continuation fee will be charged until you submit your thesis.  This is because you will be charged a fee until you complete the research study.  In addition it is important to carefully plan for all these costs whilst you are enrolled with the university.

Bench Fees

Some research programmes charge a bench fee in addition to tuition fees.  Bench fees are charged where the research will incur specific additional costs.  If you are made an offer of admission and a bench fee is applicable, this will be clearly stated on the offer letter.  Bench fees are set by individual departments within Faculties.

Tuition Fees during periods of approved interrupted study

If a research student formally requests a period of interrupted study which the Faculty approves, the University will not charge tuition fees during the period of interruption.  This means that students will not be able to access the resources and facilities of the university, including their supervision team.

Fee Charging Structure – how long your will be charged fees for

PhD
Full Time Student Charged 3 years of full time fess 12 months of zero fees  Charged continuation fee until thesis submission
Part Time Student Charged 5 years of part time fees  12 months of zero fees Charged continuation fee until thesis submission
MPhil (direct enrolment onto MPhil)
Full Time Student Charged 1 year of full time fees 12 months of zero fees  Charged continuation fee until thesis submission
Part Time Student Charged 2 years of part time fees  12 months of zero fees Charged continuation fee until thesis submission
MA/MSc by Research
Full Time Student Charged 1 year of full time fees 3 months of zero fees  Charged continuation fee until thesis submission
Part Time Student Charged 2 years of part time fees  3 months of zero fees  Charged continuation fee until thesis submission

Viva Voce Examination If the outcome of the viva voce examination is that you are required to resubmit your thesis for major amendments, you will be charged a continuation fee once more until you submit your revised thesis.  This could be upto a further 12 months of continuation fees.

So, following either 3 or 5 (or in the case of MA/MSc by Research 1 or 2 years) of paid fees, the university will not charge any fees for a period of twelve months (or in the case of MA/MSc by Research 3 months).

After the 12 months or 3 months of zero fees has expired, students will be charged a continuation fee if they have not submitted their examinable thesis to the Graduate School Office.   The continuation fee is the part time fee for their chosen method of study.   The continuation fee is charged until the student submits their thesis for examination.

Students who enroll from 1st October 2017 onwards will have an administration fee associated with their fee free period.

The tuition fee will differ depending on whether you are a Home/EU student, an international student studying in the UK, an IPhD student studying in your home country and whether you are studying full time or part time.
