Research in the Department of Public Policy

Researchers in the Department of Public Policy produce work that is nationally and internationally recognised for its quality. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the Department was awarded a 5 rating – a formal recognition of the very high calibre of the research.   

The Department regularly wins grants from leading research funders, including the ESRC, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Government departments and European bodies.  As well as significant research monographs, staff also publish regularly in the main UK and international journals, including Political Studies, Public Administration and the British Journal of Politics and International Relations.  The Department has strong research links with other leading universities in the UK, Europe and the United States, ensuring that research stays at the cutting edge of its discipline.

Research Units and Centres

  • Centre for Comparative Housing Research
    Including housing market analysis, allocations and lettings (for example, choice-based lettings), the needs of Gypsies and Travellers and housing theory.
  • Health Policy Research Unit
    Including patient and public participation in health, the voluntary sector in health, public health policy, health care reform and professional regulation
  • Local Governance Research Unit
    Including political leadership, public participation, e-democracy and the local management of terrorist attacks
