MPhil and PhD
Research in Humanities at DMU blends traditional scholarly disciplines of critical enquiry and analysis with practice-based research and creativity. We conduct research across a wide range of fields and disciplines in the Humanities. This includes historical dimensions relevant to each area, but with a strong emphasis on contemporary themes and perspectives

Independent Study and Research-based Masters Degrees

There are two study modes at MA level which allow a personally tailored course of study or research to be completed.  The  MA by Research is well suited to students with a clearly established research objective, while the MA by Independent Study is better suited to students who want to develop skills in more focused units of learning, generally with a slightly broader spectrum than the MA by Research. However, both can prepare students to continue directly onto research at PhD level, and it is worth discussing which the most is most appropriate programme for your needs with an academic mentor in your discipline.

MA by Research
The MA by Research is a year-long programme in which you carry out a supervised research project, leading to the production of a substantial dissertation or other equivalent work, depending on the discipline (which might involve creative output, a critical edition, etc, with associated written commentaries). You can pursue this programme in full-time or part-time modes (12-15 months and 24-30 months respectively).

MA by Independent Study
The MA by Independent Study is also a year-long programme, but is based on separately assessed modules (totaling 180 credits) which are defined in conjunction with your tutor to suit your study requirements, forming a set of projects each with a specific credit weighting.  One of these is a dissertation (or equivalent practice-based work) which is in the range of 60-90 credits in value. You can pursue this programme in full-time or part-time modes (12 months and 24 months respectively).
