An Evocative Transcription is a visual representation of a piece of music based on how it is interpreted by the listener. The transcription may be linear (i.e. it may be read from left to right with different symbols representing different musical events) or a much more abstract representation of the overall impact of a work.

During the first year, students are asked to produce their own evocative transcription of a piece of their choice, either on paper or in digital form, along with a written commentary that explains how the transcription relates to the original work.
