English Language Preparation Programme (ELPP)

This programme is divided into three courses, A, B and C. Each course improves your skills and abilities in English for Academic Purposes up to a level suitable for degree level study.

Students who successfully complete CELL’s English Language courses and achieve CEFR B2 in all components are guaranteed progression onto DMU UG and PG programmes providing that all other admissions criteria have been met as indicated in your offer letter.

Courses A and B

Course length: 5 weeks per course

Maximum class size: 22

Teaching Hours per week: 19

Class Times: Monday – Friday 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm

Self-study period: 2 hours per day 

Course C

Course length: 4 weeks 

Maximum class size: 22

Teaching Hours per week: 22.5 (+ a 15-minute break each morning)

Class Times: Monday – Friday 10am – 1pm and 2pm – 4pm

Self-study period: 2 hours per day.

Minimum age: You must be at least 18 years of age prior to comencing the course.

Aims of the course

Tuition and practice is provided in:

  • Academic Reading
  • Academic Writing
  • Academic Listening
  • Oral Skills
  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Social English
  • Pronunciation

The Programme will also focus on the skills you need for successful study at university degree level. For example:

  • Seminar Skills: you are assisted in the preparation of short presentations on topics related to your interests. These presentations are then followed by a group discussion.
  • Project Writing: you research a topic, which you choose. You are then guided in the writing of a report on your findings.

The English Language Preparation programme will greatly improve your chances of success in all areas of academic study and assessment. There will be a final test at the end of each course to determine your progress. You must get at least 50% and have a record of at least 80% attendance to proceed to the next course.
