What do we offer?

De Montfort University’s School and College Liaison Team provide a comprehensive programme of activities, designed to follow the higher education cycle from the beginning stages of researching courses and choosing universities through to applying via UCAS and securing student finance. Our adaptable suite of presentations, workshops and events are completely free of charge and designed to fit with your students and your timetable.

The team primarily work within a 45-mile radius of Leicester however, we will happily try to assist those schools further afield upon request. Please contact us with your requirements.

University Experience Days - BOOK HERE

When: Available throughout the year

Aimed at: Years 11, 12 and 13

Duration: Typical timings are 10.00am to 14.00pm

Our University Experience days are designed so whole year groups or smaller subject groups can visit the campus and get a taste of student life. The day will include a tour of our brilliant new-look campus, led by one of our current students, and will also offer a chance to sample a taster lecture – a real insight into what studying at university is like. We are happy to deliver a bespoke programme that best suits your students’ needs. Please do contact us to make your arrangements.

 

DMU Applicant Support Days - STUDENTS CAN BOOK HERE

When: Every Wednesday afternoon between Jan and July 2018

Aimed at: Year 13 students considering applying to DMU

Duration: 14:00pm – 16:00pm

Here at DMU we recognise that some of your students will defer their university applications until after the January UCAS deadline. To help take some of the pressure off our colleagues in sixth forms and colleges we will be holding bespoke support days for any students who are considering applying to DMU but are yet to submit their applications. Our team will be on hand to offer one-to-one personal statement support and answer any questions they may have about their application to DMU. Students will also have the opportunity to take a tour of the campus and speak with members of staff from our faculties. 

 

Creative Portfolio Masterclass - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Year 12 and Year 13 students

Duration: Flexible

Many art and design courses require a creative portfolio as part of the minimum entry requirements. A portfolio is a collection of your work, or a 'visual diary', showing how your skills and ideas have developed over time. It demonstrates your creativity, personality, abilities and commitment, and helps us to evaluate your potential. There will be an opportunity to see sample portfolios. This session will cover:·What is a portfolio? What you should include in your portfolio? How you should present your portfolio? How to talk about your work confidently?

 

Fashion Styling Taster Session - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Year 12 and Year 13 students

Duration: 10.00am - 14.00pm

As part of the fast paced and dynamic world of fashion, the Fashion Stylist and communicator manipulates visual stories, employs technologies and exploits promotional platforms. They engage with audiences, telling style stories to transform fashion products from just objects into modern must-have trends. During this short session, we will introduce you to the context and practice of how stylists work in the fashion industry and then you can get hands-on. The session is fully interactive. 

 

Mechanical Engineering Taster Day - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13 students

Duration: 10.00am - 14.00pm

Our Mechanical Engineering Experience Day is an exciting opportunity to find out how a degree in Mechanical Engineering will equip students with the skills and analytical and practical expertise to become a professional engineer.

The programme for the day includes a tour of our campus and facilities, a taster session on Film Studies and a taster session in our radio production and film studios. Attendees will also get the chance to find out about our work experience placements, our global opportunities and hear first-hand from our student ambassadors about their university experience so far.


Creative Design Experience Day - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Years 12 and 13

Duration: 10.00am – 14.00pm

The programme for the day includes a tour of our campus and facilities and a masterclass in the fundamentals of visual communications from the Leicester Media School Drawing Centre, which will help with building a strong portfolio for any creative course. Attendees will also get the chance to find out about our work experience placements, our global opportunities and hear first-hand from our student ambassadors about their university experience so far.

Aimed at: Years 12 and 13

Duration: 10.00am – 14.00pm

The programme for the day includes a tour of our campus and facilities, a talk giving an overview of the specialist career options available to computing graduates like Cyber Security and Computer Games Programming and a chance to try coding. Attendees will also get the chance to find out about our work experience placements, our global opportunities and hear first-hand from our student ambassadors about their university experience so far.

 

Bloomberg Trading Day Taster Session - BOOK HERE

When: Thursday 17 May & Wednesday 4 July 2018

Aimed at: Year 12 and Year 13 students

Duration: Typical timings will be 10:00am – 14:00pm

Bloomberg Terminals are used worldwide in the fields of finance, economics and business management. At DMU we have a trading room dedicated to Bloomberg software, used by over 325,000 professional users on a daily basis. During this short session, you will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience, looking at how the financial markets work as well as gaining a general overview of the current economic climate. The session is fully interactive and can be tailored to any specific areas in which students are interested. 

 

Criminal Court Experience Day - BOOK HERE

When: Wednesday 4 July 2018

Aimed at: Year 12 and Year 13 students

Duration: Typical timings will be 10:00am - 14:00pm

The day will begin with an introduction to the Criminal Court system followed by a "Day in the life of" talk by a practicing criminal solicitor about her experiences and a question and answer session. You will undertake some skills training in advocacy and then prepare and participate in a bail application either as the advocate for the Prosecution or the Defence. 

 

Dare to Discover - FIND OUT MORE HERE

Aimed at: Year 12

Duration: 09:30am – 14:30pm

Our Dare to Discover event will open the university up to multiple sixth forms and colleges and will provide an ideal opportunity for your learners to interact with fellow students and research further into higher education at a TEF Gold Award university. Students will also benefit from inspiring talks from our Students’ Union reps and #DMUglobal team about the many opportunities available to enhance the student experience, such as clubs and societies, and international trips. The day coincides with our annual Art and Design Degree Show and Faculty of Technology Degree Show and as such the programme will include an optional viewing of our final year students’ work. We recognise that the EPQ qualification is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop the skills necessary for self-guided learning and to experience university style study; therefore we are offering your students the opportunity to visit our campus for a research skills day to support them with their EPQ project. This includes a workshop on finding and selecting resources, critical thinking and decision making skills, referencing, and evaluation and presentation skills. Students will also have the opportunity to access our library learning resources to support their research into their chosen subject area. Access Student Support Day for Nursing & Midwifery Applicants - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Students currently studying on an Access programme

Duration: Typical timings are 09.30am to 15.00pm

Our dedicated support day for students on an Access programme has proved popular with the hundreds of students who have taken part. We recognise that choosing to apply for competitive course areas such as Nursing or Midwifery can bring with it many questions, concerns and doubts. Our staff will be on hand to help reassure your learners and provide advice and information on all of the Nursing and Midwifery programmes we deliver at DMU. Support Days include advice on writing a UCAS personal statement, preparing for a university interview and there is insight on student life from a current student nurse or midwife. 

 

Pharmacy Masterclass - ENQUIRE HERE

Now an annual event, the DMU Pharmacy Masterclass has proved popular with students wishing to explore the role of a pharmacist. Our experienced and dedicated academics work alongside your students to help develop their knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences and provide an opportunity to a gain lab-based experience in our industry standard pharmacy labs.

This presentation aims to encourage Year 12 students thinking about the year ahead and help them strengthen their UCAS application over the summer break. A current DMU student provides a personal account of the wider aspects of university life – living away, eating well, having fun while studying effectively and helps to address some of the common concerns and worries students may have, while inspiring them about the exciting times ahead. UCAS: What happens next? - BOOK HERE

This presentation covers what happens in the UCAS process once a student submits their application. We will discuss responding to offers, how to use UCAS Extra and advise them on Clearing and how to prepare for results day. It provides an opportunity for students to plan ahead and prepare for the final hurdles before starting university.

What should I take to university? What if I don’t make friends? Is it a big jump academically from A-Levels/BTEC to a degree? The talk will provide advice on how to structure the personal statement, and how to make the most of the 47 lines available. This session can also include interactive activities to get students ‘mind-mapping’ the key aspects of their statement.

What can students expect from a university interview? This talk aims to help students fully prepare for the big day. Students will learn how to impress the interview panel and get tips on the questions and situations that might lie ahead. This talk can be tailored to specific subject areas.

Duration: We recommend a 20 minute appointment per student

Mock one-to-one interviews are a fantastic way for students to boost their confidence, identify areas where further research is needed, and to practise answering possible questions based on their personal statement. After the mock interview, we provide constructive feedback.

A CV gives employers an insight into an individual’s skills, experiences and personal attributes, and it’s important for students to present themselves the best they can. In this session, we will support students taking their first steps in creating a stand-out CV. All students can benefit from creating a CV, either to gain work experience prior to starting university or in preparation for applying for their first job.

This conference is for teachers and advisers at schools and colleges, who have responsibility for supporting students applying to university.

Through keynote speakers, plenaries and workshops we explore current issues in admissions and recruitment. We also aim to equip delegates with updated practical information to take back to their workplace, for colleagues and learners. This includes information on entry requirements, graduate outcomes, student finance, subject range and choices and the impact of changes to framework in both sectors.

This event is catered and is free of charge.

 

Teacher/Careers Adviser Support Day - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Teaching staff, Careers Advisers, Sixth Form support staff

With so many options available within higher education, it can be a minefield when trying to offer advice to students on everything from employability to student loans. Therefore we would like to support you by offering you the chance to visit campus and spend a few hours on campus, receiving updates on important topics that will help you in your day-to-day roles. Our support days are bespoke to your sixth form or college and we are happy to work with small or large groups, and tailor the information to your needs. Sessions on offer can include a campus tour to explore our impressive facilities, specialist information on supporting students with disabilities through the UCAS application process, or finding out how students can enhance their employability at university. Writing a UCAS Supporting Reference - ENQUIRE HERE

Aimed at: Anyone responsible for contributing to the UCAS reference

Duration: 45 minutes

It’s not just students who need support when it comes to writing a UCAS statement. Staff responsible for supporting a student’s application can often be at a loss as to where to start with the supporting reference. What should or shouldn’t they include? What information do the universities need to know? What if a student wants to see the reference? This talk will feature advice from our admissions team on how best to support your students’ applications and the level of detail they are expecting.

It’s increasingly important to showcase progression opportunities to your learners once they finish school or college, and as such many of you will hold dedicated higher education or careers fairs. If you would like a representative from DMU to attend with an information stand, please do let us know the details of your event.
