Before they go

It is a good idea to check that your child has everything they need in plenty of time for university to start. Getting everything organised in advance means that students can be confident that they will be prepared.

Before they begin university students will need to make sure they have:

  • Confirmed their place through UCAS Track and replied to any letters that have been posted to them
  • Confirmed their student finance package with Student Finance England
  • Booked their accommodation if staying away from home
  • Applied for a student bank account
  • Researched travel options i.e. parking permits, railcard/bus cards
  • Read any paperwork their university/school/department/course may have sent to them

When they arrive at university students will need the following documentation:

  • All university paperwork and their offer letter
  • Student Finance England paperwork or a method of payment for tuition fees, if applicable
  • Bank details
  • Passport sized photos
  • Form of official ID for enrolment
  • Confirmation of their place in halls of residence or private rented accommodation, if moving away

Study materials

Before starting their studies students can prepare by making sure they have the correct study materials, such as:

  • The required reading material for the first term
  • Necessary stationery
  • Specialist course equipment if needed

Household essentials/home comforts

It is worth checking if any household items are provided in their accommodation before you purchase them. These are a few things it may be a good idea to take to university:

  • Duvet and pillow plus covers and sheets
  • Pots and pans
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Towels
  • Coat hangers
  • Personal items including any medication, photos and electronic devices with chargers
