June 2009

Special Olympics Leicester, Special Olympics Great Britain, University of Leicester and De Montfort University will jointly be launching the new book, A Sporting Chance: The History of Special Olympics Great Britain in June.

This important publication is a full colour pictorial and textual record of the development of Special Olympics in Great Britain since 1978. It also covers the start of activities and sports in the immediate post-war period in the United Kingdom for people with learning difficulties.

The publication offers a window on how the passion of a few committed individuals has, over time, become a national movement.

Fascinating to explore

The author, Dr Susan Barton, has written an engaging history of the Special Olympics Great Britain, drawing on visual, textual and interview material from athletes and their families.

Dr Barton is a Research Fellow on a research project which involves both De Montfort University and the University of Leicester.

The research is looking at the local and wider impact of the Special Olympics GB National Summer Games 2009 in Leicester.

"It has been fascinating to explore the history of the Special Olympics GB and to chart its remarkable development and success. We hope the book will inform the public and raise the profile, both locally and nationally, of athletes with learning difficulties".

A Sporting Chance: The History of Special Olympics Great Britain will be launched on Tuesday 23 June at 5:30pm in the Leicester City Lending Library on Belvoir Street.
