Scott has a professional career history of over ten years working in public affairs, campaigns and the media.
He brings to his research and teaching his experience of creating and managing a wide range of successful initiatives and campaigns, drawing upon direct experience of working in communications in the local government, health and voluntary sectors, as well as from the high profile world of political communications.
Scott’s research work is focused on two strands of inquiry.
He has been developing further his PhD by researching the impact of population ageing on political communications and political marketing, as well as exploring the associated emerging discourses of its implications as constructed by political strategists and the media. He has published on how political parties attempt to segment the electorate by age and is currently preparing a book chapter on political marketing in ageing democracies. Scott’s work on the changing age structure of parliamentary constituencies based on the new 2010 boundaries will be published by Age UK in April. His research on political and media discourses will contribute to the department’s Election 2010 Online project
Scott is also interested in the relationship between new media and political activism. He has published on the impact of the internet on the 2005 general election. He is also developing research for book chapter publication on how NGOs and bloggers network online to expose human rights abuses by authoritarian regimes, with emphasis on networks based around abuses in Burma and Zimbabwe.
Immediately prior to joining DMU Scott gained a MSc in Social Research and completed a PhD at Loughborough University.
Scott currently teaches on undergraduate modules on public relations, journalism, political communication and media research methods, and on PR and communication theory and research methods at postgraduate level.
He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and within the Political Studies Association he is a member of the Media and Politics and Political Marketing specialist groups.
