PHCO330X Materials Science
Module Leader: Dr D Armitage
Associated Staff: Dr W Schlindwein, Dr I Ermolina
Module Characteristics
This module brings together students past working knowledge on materials from their previous experience and introduces the concept of materials science as a separate discipline. Materials Science is the study of the properties of matter and is highly relevant to the understanding of pharmaceutical materials. Basic materials principles will be reviewed, highlighting the differences between material classes. This module aims to provide the underpinning Materials Science theory necessary to understand complex pharmaceutical processes such as compaction during tablet manufacture.
Mechanical properties of materials will be examined. The analytical techniques used to characterise materials will also be studied in detail along with the applications of specialist materials in Pharmaceutical Processing, e.g. stainless steels and hard coating for tablet punches. Novel, advanced materials with relevance to pharmaceutics will be explored, including biomaterials and novel materials for drug delivery.
