PHCO2311: Product Formulation

Module Leader: Dr P.M. Taylor
Associated Staff:Dr M. Goodman, Mr M.R. Billany, Dr W Schlindwein, Dr D Armitage and Dr M Li

Module Characteristics
This module introduces the student to the formulation of pharmaceutical products, covering both the general principles and the requirements of formulations.

The basic concepts of bioavailability and its clinical relevance are explained with methods of its determination and how it is influenced. The applications and formulation of the major groups of products to be covered are solution, suspension, aerosol (pressurised) products, topical preparations, suppositories and solid-dosage form products. The second half of the module introduces how and why cosmetic and toiletry products are formulated. It covers the principles of surface and colloid chemistry and introduces knowledge of raw materials which underpin efficient formulation.

The products are introduced in three main categories: skincare, haircare, bath and shower; and the physiology and problems associated with each tissue provide a backdrop to a thorough consideration of the major types of formulation. The theoretical component is supported by a programme of laboratory practicals which not only emphasise and extend key points of the theory, but they also require students to apply a problem-solving approach to evaluate formulations.
