MPharm

MPharm Intro Image

Pharmacists are experts in all aspects of medicines and drugs, who use their expertise to advise prescribers on drug selection and patients on how to get the most from their medicines; as such they play a vital role in providing quality healthcare to patients. Pharmacists can be involved in any aspect of the preparation and use of medicines from their discovery and development to their use by patients; in recent years the pharmacist's role has become increasingly clinically orientated.

Becoming a pharmacist involves science-based and clinical training in the preparation, supply and selection of medicines for the treatment and prevention of disease.  In order to qualify as a pharmacist you must complete a four-year MPharm degree and then a one year practical placement (the pre-registration year), during which the prospective pharmacist must demonstrate essential competencies.   At the end of this year, the graduate must sit the professional registration examination.

The primary objective of the Pharmacy degree course at the Leicester School of Pharmacy is to provide the knowledge, understanding and practical skills necessary for the competent and successful practice of pharmacy.  Considerable emphasis is placed on the development of a professional attitude and patient orientation through contacts with practising pharmacists and with patients.
