De Montfort University successfully hosted the first ever Leicester Science Festival, as part of the National Science and Engineering Week. The ‘Earth’ themed event ran over two days, 12 and 13 March 2010. Local schools were invited on Friday 12 March to explore the many different activities that were on offer, one of which included a workshop from Twycross zoo which gave children the opportunity to see live animals up close, including a gecko, tarantula, corn snake, and chinchilla. A forensic science workshop, by Uppingham College allowed children to get dressed up in white overalls that covered them from head to toe, and examine fingerprints and hair samples. These interactive sessions proved to be a real hit with both children and staff members who thoroughly enjoyed the practical element of the workshops! Visitors had the chance to explore the National Space Centre’s Stardome which was based in the exhibition area. A large, freestanding, dome shaped structure invited children to sit under the stars and admire space, right here in the heart of Leicester! Children had 30 minutes to lose themselves in Stardome, and learn more about the other planets that exist within our universe. One of our most popular exhibition stands on the day was Sublime Science which offered children the opportunity to learn how science can be fun by engaging with them on a level that they enjoy and can appreciate. Activities included rocket launches, gooey slime-making, exploding fountains as well as children making their own sweets as a science experiment! Mad Marc is the founder of Sublime Science and thrives on entertaining, educating and inspiring young children with interactive demonstrations.
