![]() New CoursesNew Courses available nowThis course has been specifically designed to give graduates a competitive advantage in gaining employment in any biopharmaceutical field; these include large global biopharmaceutical companies, small to medium biotechnology companies, academic institutions or research institutions allied to human health. The course provides a response to the rapidly expanding field in the mode of discovery and production of biopharmaceuticals and addresses the lack of pertinent skills in the workforce. This course has a high practical content, preparing graduates to quickly enter an industrial setting. It offers a unique ‘bench to bedside’ approach from understanding the development of biopharmaceutical treatments to verification for non-toxicity required prior to clinical trials. The course encompasses many of the manufacturing systems (i.e. bacteria, baker’s yeast, insect, plant and mammalian cells) used for the commercial production of biopharmaceuticals. It offers a strong focus on practical aspects of pharmaceutical industry applications unlike most other Biotechnology courses which provide mostly general theory on specific living cell-based (bio-) technologies. DMU’s Leicester School of Pharmacy has a unique combination of expertise with staff having cross-disciplinary interests in Pharmacy, Biology and Chemistry. Many of the staff have spent time in industry and are aware of the demands of this environment. The areas in which we specialize are at the forefront of current and future commercial development globally. The Health & Life Science Faculty has received major government and private funds for development of its laboratories as well as further equipment funding allowing the purchase of equipment that matches those in the best industrial labs. Doctorate in Health Science (DHSci) The course acknowledges the need for all senior staff in nursing, midwifery and Allied Health Professions (audiologists, biomedical scientists and speech and language therapists) within the NHS to be involved in research. The flexible approach to learning enables participants to build knowledge and skills in designing and conducting programmes of research in their respective health care fields. The DHSci has two distinct phases: Phase one incorporates level 5 research modules with the Faculty of Health & Life Sciences which constitutes the taught element of the programme. Phase two comprises an independent research study relevant to students’ practice area culminating in the completion of novel, independent research, which is peer reviewed and submitted for examination at doctoral level. Graduates from the course can expect to enhance their hospital-based and/or community based clinical career in research, management and education. The DHSci maximises career opportunities through the provision of high quality research training and subject specific supervision . Advanced Health and Professional Practice (MSc) The MSc Advanced Health and Professional Practice programme is a post-registration award designed to meet the advancing professional needs of registered nurses, midwives, specialised community public health nurses and allied health professionals. The programme was designed intending to meet the needs of individual practitioners who are seeking a flexible and adaptable route to a successful post-graduate degree outcome or to undertake postgraduate level study for continual professional development purposes at advanced level. One of the central aims of the programme is to enable students to develop practice by the four integrated sub-roles of practitioner, educator, researcher and leader. Completing the Advanced Health & Professional Practice course will support graduates career progression to more senior posts within health care organisations or educational institutions. |
