![]() Applied Social SciencesA diverse range of programmes![]() ![]() Our programmes combine the academic rigour of University study with the practical, vocational and professional skills required to work in a number of social science areas. The School prides itself on its ability to build upon and develop its relationships with key stakeholders locally, regionally, nationally and internationally through work with the criminal justice, social work and social care sectors, youth and community agencies, and Professional Statutory Regulatory Bodies. There are over 90 academic and research staff in the School offering an extensive portfolio of over 30 taught programmes ranging from foundation degree to masters provision. In order to achieve the effective development and delivery of such a diverse range of programmes the School is organised into four academic Divisions. Community and Criminal Justice The Community and Criminal Justice Division offers training programmes at Foundation Degree level for Police Officers in Leicestershire and, in partnership with Castle College, in Nottinghamshire. The Division also provides training in the area of probation work and finally an undergraduate Applied Criminology degree and a MA in Criminal Justice. All of the programmes within the Division have been endorsed by Skillsmark. The Psychology Division offers undergraduate programmes which carry accreditation by the British Psychological Society, as well as opportunities for research leading to masters or PhD qualifications. Social Work and Health Studies The Social Work and Health Studies Division offers a range of social work, social care and health related programmes, including a three year full-time BA Honours Social Work Degree accredited by the General Social Care Council. Health Studies courses range from a Foundation Degree in Children, Families and Community Health to the MA in Applied Health Studies. The Youth and Community Division offers a range of study options from short courses for practitioners through to postgraduate and research degrees at MPhil/PhD level. Many of the Division’s programmes combine academic study with the National Youth Agency endorsed Professional Qualification in Youth Work (JNC). Besides its extensive portfolio of taught provision, the School has a very active research culture amongst its staff which is reflected in research-led teaching, a range of research projects, and the diverse areas of research being undertaken by our PhD students.
