In response to Department of Health 'Modernising Scientific Careers' national programme; changing the way healthcare scientists are trained and educated for professions in the NHS, DeMontfort University has made changes to the curriculum of this course, effective from September 2011, after validation in the Spring.

The new Healthcare Science (HCS) degree programmes aim to develop a sustainable HCS workforce for the contemporary and ever-changing future. Click here for further details on these exciting new opportunities.

Clinical Physiology

The BSc. (Hons) Clinical Physiology degree course is based on the Registration Council for Clinical Physiology (RCCP) recommended four year part-time course providing a route for NHS employed trainees to complete the necessary training required for entry to the voluntary register operated by the RCCP. The course is aimed at those trainees who are employed within a hospital physiological measurement department, specifically cardiology (ECG), gastrointestinal physiology (GI), neurophysiology and respiratory physiology. The GI specialist modules are distance learning during years one and two. The course is developed and delivered with the relevant individual professional bodies: the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology (SCST), the Association of Gastrointestinal  Physiologists (AGIP), the Electrophysiological Technologists Association (EPTA) and  the Association of Respiratory Technologists (ARTP).

A common core of modules cover the areas of Anatomy and Physiology,Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Pharmacology, Communication Skills, Psychology and Research Methods. The course structure allows you to follow a pathway specific to yourspecialism. The specialist modules are of two types: Specialist theory modules and Clinical practice modules related to work-based training.

The specialist theory and clinical practice modules allow the integration of the appropriate professional qualifications into the Clinical Physiology Degree. Specialist and clinical practice modules are offered in: Cardiology, Gastrointestinal Physiology, Neurophysiology and Respiratory Physiology.

Clinical Technology

The BSc. (Hons) Clinical Technology degree course is a similar course to that outlined above but aimed at NHS trainees in medical physics departments particularly those in nuclear medicine, radiotherapy and diagnostic radiology. It has been developed and is delivered with, and accredited by the Institute for Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).

The course has a core of modules that covers Anatomy and Physiology, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Information Technology, Pharmacology, Communication Skills, Psychology and Research Methods. The course structure allows you to follow a pathway specific to your own specialism. Specialist theory and clinical practice modules allow integration of appropriate professional qualifications into the Clinical Physiology Degree. Specialist and clinical practice modules are offered in: Nuclear Medicine, Radiotherapy, Diagnostic Radiology and Ultrasound.
