Programme

Year one
Design research, drawing and illustration skills, and an ability to present and communicate ideas and concepts to a high professional standard are developed throughout the year. You will complete a series of shoe design projects focusing on a comprehensive range of footwear styles. Modules include:

  • Complete Footwear Studies
  • Integrated Footwear Studies.

Year two
The second year is about experimentation and putting into play skills learnt in the first year. Projects include Ladieswear, Menswear and Performance Sportswear, and have included projects set by companies such as Jeffery West, Paul Smith and Pentland brands. You also have an option in term two to take a Fashion Accessories module. Modules include:

  • Progressive Footwear Studies
  • Style and Colour Prediction
  • Technical Footwear Option*
  • Fashion Accessories.

*This module includes a unique bespoke project which covers all aspects of made- to-measure footwear.

Year three
You will enter various competitions, including Lineapelle, Drapers and Bata, which lead to prestigious awards and encourage you to develop your graphic communication skills. You are also able to work with an external company and have the opportunity to explore your creativity. Modules include:

  • Advanced Footwear Studies
  • Major Project.

Facilities
The Footwear Design area includes a large, well-lit, open-plan studio, complete with individual desk space and storage facilities. Specialist shoemaking workshops are attached to the studio, and technical support and further workshops are available for the production of individual prototype components such as soles, heels and trims.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching is delivered through combinations of lectures, seminars, individual and group tutorials, demonstrations and visits. Work is assessed against specific criteria which will cover 2D work such as research reports, design sketchbooks and presentation boards including CAD, 3D work such as shoe prototypes and marketing materials, and formal presentations to peers, staff and external clients.

Awards and competitions
All students are encouraged to enter work for national and international competitions including the RSA Student Design awards, the EMAP Student Footwear award, and Student Accessory Designer of the Year award. In 2008 our students achieved an unprecedented clean sweep in Milan, winning first, second and third prizes in the Lineapelle Footwear Competition. We were also awarded first prize in the prestigious Bata International Design Award.

Career opportunities
The course leads to successful careers in footwear design, buying and marketing, as well as using practical skills and shoemaking knowledge in the production and technical areas of the footwear industry. Recent graduates are working for companies such as Gucci, Red or Dead, Gina, Na Na, Morgan, Ellesse, Pentland, Blushu, Browning, Office, Kurt Gieger, New Balance, Karen Millen, Adidas and Firetrap.

Entry requirements
You should have a good portfolio, plus one of the following:

  • Successful completion of an art and design Foundation course
  • National Diploma merit profile in a relevant subject
  • 240 UCAS points, to include two GCE/VCE A Levels with grade C in at least one art or design subject
  • Progression or Advanced Diploma with 240 UCAS points, to include art or designt.
All equivalent international qualifications are welcome, as are applications from mature students with alternative qualifications and/or work experience. You should have a strong GCSE profile, including English at grade C or equivalent. UK applicants with relevant qualifications will be invited to bring their portfolio of work to an open day and interview. Overseas applicants will be invited to send samples of their work.
