Programme
The course is driven by studio-based design projects, supported by lectures where you learn to apply knowledge and understanding to resolve a range of architectural design problems.
Year one
The focus is to give you a solid grounding in the discipline of Architecture, through the study of construction and technology, environmental studies, history and manual and computer-based representational techniques. This follows a project-based approach related to domestic buildings.
Year two
The first year themes are developed at a more complex level with an emphasis on the Urban Context. You will learn how to design buildings using a number of approaches so that you can gain as wide an experience of architectural design as possible.
Year three
In the final year, you will have developed the confidence and ability to engage with more intricate designs and be able to integrate your design
knowledge to the point where you are ready for your first experience of practice. You are increasingly encouraged to become self selective and to develop your personal approach to architecture.
At the end of three years’ study, you can expect to be able not only to design buildings of merit but also to have developed a keen and critical awareness of the built environment.
Facilities
Architecture students benefit from multipurpose studio spaces with extensive CAD facilities, and have access to workshops to make concept and design models and construction details. The Resource Centre provides a wide range of specialist information used in architectural practice, including web-based catalogues, the RIBA Office Library, professional directories, maps, a slide and video collection and building material samples. The Design Studio provides an office-like environment which combines the latest computer equipment with manual drawing and design techniques. These include CAD and modelling software, animation and environmental simulation and access to the latest rapid prototyping machines and 2D printing. Specialist laboratories deal with environment design, materials analysis and structures.
Teaching and assessment
Teaching and learning is varied, active, participatory and integrated. Progress is evaluated primarily through continuous assessment. Regular project reviews and design critiques form an integral part of the course together with essays, reports, computer assignments, exhibition displays and group presentations.
Career opportunities
The course is primarily designed for students who wish to qualify as a professional Architect. Graduates readily find employment and many work for leading practices including: Foster and Partners, Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners Ltd and Michael Hopkins and Partners.
There are also opportunities in landscape architecture, information technology, conservation, education and journalism. Many students proceed to the three year BArch Part 2 course here. This begins with a year in practice, and leads to final qualification as an architect.
