Programme
The course combines individual subject areas to provide the knowledge and technical skills for high level multimedia design. You will graduate with a portfolio of work which demonstrates your talent across the three key areas:

  • Website design and electronic publishing for industrial and commercial applications, entertainment, education and the arts
  • Broadcast Design covers the design of TV graphics, broadcast station ID, animation for children’s television and interactive interface for digital television
  • Multimedia performance deals with the creation of interactive environments, for example in night clubs, museums, art galleries, concerts and conferences.

Year two

  • Interactive Design 2

  • Process and Production
  • Visual Communication.

Year three

  • Interactive Design 3
  • Professional Practice
  • Major Negotiated Project.

Facilities
Excellent technical facilities include digital sound recording and editing studios, digital editing facilities, computer suites for lectures and practical workshops, a dedicated drawing and graphics studio and lecture/seminar rooms for audio-visual presentation.

Teaching and assessment
Teaching is delivered primarily through practical studio sessions, seminars and lectures. Extensive use is made of the University’s web-based Virtual Learning Environment and additional Web 2.0 software, to support both the learning and teaching of the course and a vibrant course community. Assessments will include regular presentations of art work and practical projects for peer, tutor and industry critique. Guidance on producing a professional portfolio is given by external partners.

Awards and competitions
Our students regularly take part in national design competitions and are often nominated for awards, including the prestigious D&AD Student Awards (Digital Design category).

Career opportunities
There is enormous scope for interactive design graduates in website design, electronic publishing, education and training, broadcasting, digital sound design, interactive installations and performance arts. The course has close links with national and regional industrial partners, including CiTV, Phoenix Arts, Working Solutions and Channel 20/20. Graduates are employed by BBC TV, HSBC, Channel 4 TV and New Media Corporation.

Entry requirements
You should have a good portfolio, plus one of the following:
  • Successful completion of an art and design Foundation course
  • National Diploma merit profile in a relevant subject
  • 240 UCAS points, to include two GCE/VCE A Levels with grade C in at least one art or design subject
  • Progression or Advanced Diploma with 240 UCAS points, to include art or design.
All equivalent international qualifications are welcome, as are applications from mature students with alternative qualifications and/or work experience. You should have a strong GCSE profile, including English at grade C or equivalent. UK applicants with relevant qualifications will be invited to bring their portfolio of work to an open day and interview. Overseas applicants will be invited to send samples of their work.
