| Architecture students rehabilitate youth offenders with Rok | Third-year Architecture students Sam Brown, Tom Morgan, and Ben Higham are helping young offenders make a successful return to society. With financial support from the building company Rok, they are working at Hill Holt Wood social enterprise community, where young people are trained and rehabilitated.
Sam Brown said: “We anticipate becoming the on-site architects for the community, assisting them with the training and helping them build a better future.” As part of the programme, students will design and construct several buildings, including their own accommodation.
Professor David Dernie, Head of Leicester School of Architecture at DMU and Martin Burton, area director of Rok, selected the three students after Art and Design approached Rok – builders of the new £25 million DMU Business and Law building – to provide sponsorship for students showing particular flair. | Architecture students Sam Brown, Tom Morgan, and Ben Higham act as on-site architects for youth offenders at Hill Holt Wood, sponsored by Rok.
Burton said: “We’re delighted to be supporting these three students in one of the most interesting routes through the practical elements of the University course. We all wish them well, and look forward to admiring the results of their efforts in both the physical sense of the new woodland buildings and also in the benefits to society and the young people with whom they’ll be working.” |
