Cutting the cost of commuting
If you are commuting to DMU to study, you may want to consider applying for the DMU Support Fund. This fund is in place to help students with additional expenses.
You may also find the following tips useful to help you save on travel costs throughout the year.
Train and bus
Railcards - if you are travelling by train, you can get a third off most rail fares with the Young Persons Railcard, these cost £30 per year. This discount card is available to people aged 16-25 years old, or over 25 and in full-time education
The Family and Friends Railcard is available to anyone with children and up to four adults can travel on this and get a third off. If you take up to four children aged between five and 15, you could save up to 60 per cent on each child fare. Please note that this discount is only available during weekends and public holidays, or after 10am on weekdays
Split your train tickets - instead of buying tickets for a whole journey, split it. So for example if you are traveling from Sheffield to DMU, buy a ticket from Sheffield to Derby and then another from Derby to Leicester. This often works out cheaper and you can stay on the same train!
Buying single tickets - usually buying a return ticket is cheaper than buying two single tickets. However, there are exceptions. Check out thetrainline.com for the best deals
Megabus - if you don't mind travelling either late at night or early in the morning, then consider the Megabus for some seriously discounted journeys. They also offer discounted train journeys to London.
Cutting car insurance costs - as a parent you may be able to cut the cost of your teenager's policy by adding your name to it. Comprehensive policies now often cost less than third party policies. Insuring all your vehicles with the same insurer usually cuts costs
Use your phone - those with a smartphone can download the Just Park application, this can help you find the cheapest places to park using the GPS on your device. The Petrolprices.com application can help you find the cheapest petrol in your area.
