Vice-Chancellor's Fund

The Vice-Chancellor’s Fund was launched in November 2010 to provide scholarships to deserving students whose studies and university experience would benefit from increased financial support.

Driven by De Montfort University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dominic Shellard, the Vice-Chancellor's Fund reflects his personal interest in the welfare, ambition and potential of all our students and receives support from senior staff, board members, alumni and friends of the university, including the Vice-Chancellor himself.

There are three awards available this year:

Inspiration Prize

Education has the potential to shape lives and fulfil hopes and ambitions. For some students, however, university life is very different. Encountering bereavement, ill health or a traumatic experience are challenges that place enormous pressure on students, and these pressures are not easily overcome. Unfortunately students with otherwise bright futures often leave university and lose the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

The Inspiration Prize is an award of up to £1,000 to support students to overcome severe hardship and continue their education. It is also a gift to acknowledge their strength and determination to succeed.

Reverend Jesse Jackson Prize

At DMU we are proud of our diverse, multicultural student population and our community relationship with a vibrant city. The Reverend Jesse Jackson Prize has been introduced to encourage further social cohesion between students and the community. We believe our diverse student body is one of our greatest strengths and, by encouraging students to embrace different cultures, faiths and beliefs, we are creating harmony within the university and among our local communities; creating truly global citizens.

The Reverend Jesse Jackson Prize is an award of up to £1,000 established to support students or DMU societies to set up projects that will increase cultural integration within the local community or on campus.

Vice-Chancellor’s Bursary

DMU Art and Design have created a centre of excellence by providing a first-class curriculum specialising in innovation and creativity, equipping students with skills and insight for the commercial world. The cost of course material for these subjects is often very expensive and prohibits some students from the courses they want to study. For others their only option is to struggle financially.

This year the Vice-Chancellor’s Bursary will support students in Art, Design and Humanities. The fund will offer bursaries of up to £200 to enable students to focus on their studies without worrying about the overbearing financial cost, making Art and Design courses at DMU accessible to all.
