Mature Student Officer
Emilia Djapouras - Mature Student Officer (Frontrunner)
Youth Work and Community Development BA (Hons)
My name is Emilia Djiapouras, and I’m your new Mature Student Frontrunner. I am doing my BA (Hons) in Youth Work and Community Development here at DMU, and so far, it has been a brilliant experience. That being said, I want to make sure you have a fantastic learning experience at University too. Whether you are returning to education, or this is your first time in Higher Education, it is my pleasure to welcome you to De Montfort University and I look forward to working with you.
I am classed as a ‘mature student’ now that I have turned 21 and initially I had to ask myself what this would mean. Would I fit in? Would I still have the time to try new things? Of course, I will. At DMU, you will feel right at home as over 55% of our student population are 21 or over. This makes DMU above the sector average, so you made a good choice in coming here.
I will be working closely with the Mature Students’ Society where students from all walks of life meet and share the challenges that arise when juggling additional responsibilities and academic work. Through engaging with the Society’s activities, you could gain a sense of community and support. It is important that the Society is student-led, and that you decide what will help you get the most out of your university experience.
One key aim of my role is to actively promote the engagement of all DMU mature students, from a variety of diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, religions, and walks of life. I want to ensure students feel included and valued. To fulfil this, I will work closely with the university and DSU to arrange activities with students (and even their families). So, this means you will probably be seeing a lot of me over the year, and I do hope I will see a lot of you all too.
