Social Life

Although you've come to DMU to study, it's important to find time to rest, relax and make friends too. You'll find details below of some of the activities that take place on campus - you might find something here that interests you, or alternatively come and see us for a chat in the Student Gateway.

International Students Cafe

De Montfort Students’ Union (DSU) invites you to International Students Café. The Cafe is an opportunity to meet and talk to both international and UK students and helps you to develop your confidence with spoken English in a friendly environment.

The International Students Café takes place in term-time, every Wednesday from 2pm until 4pm in the DSU Lounge, on the first floor of the Campus Centre. Feel free to drop by for a cup of tea or coffee and meet some of the other students.

Explore UK!

The Explore UK programme runs a different trip each month to a range of towns, cities and cultural places throughout Great Britain. Some of our previous trips have included Oxford, Scotland, Liverpool, York, Stonehenge, Wales and Windsor Castle! We try to introduce new destinations every year - it's a great way to see the country and to make new friends at the same time. Find out more about our trips programme here.

Student Societies

With over 80 different societies at DMU, there's something for all tastes and cultures. The Students' Union can give you more information about this, and if there's something you are interested in that's not represented – they can advise you on how to start up your own society!

Check for more information here or visit the Volunteering & Societies office in the Students’ Union (room 1.30 in the Campus Centre).

i-Buddies

i-Buddies is our international buddy scheme and links newly-arrived international students with existing current students - it's great way to meet new people when new on campus. The scheme runs twice a year - find out more here.

Volunteering

Volunteering can be a good way to get involved in the local community, meet new people and practice your English, as well as gaining new skills and maybe increasing your confidence.

The Students' Union Volunteering team have access to hundreds of unique and exciting volunteering opportunities, including working for local TV and radio, helping to organise Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival and designing murals for school playgrounds across the city.

Or, you might be interested in volunteering with the award-winning Square Mile Project, which links DMU students and staff with local people, to improve the lives of residents within a square mile of Leicester. Find out more here.
