i-Buddy case study - Cody and George
i-Cody and George are one of the pairs of students who took part in this year’s i-Buddies Scheme.
Cody is a new international student from America studying Advertising and Marketing Communications. George is a final year student in the Business School who was returning to DMU after an industrial placement year with Volkswagen.
They were matched as Buddies and met up at the International Welcome night.
Cody feels that as a new international arrival it can be easy to get caught in ‘an international bubble’ but the i-Buddies programme makes it easy to make new friends who are ’outgoing, curious about the world and ready to meet new people … it encourages international students to mix with home students and get an authentic insight into UK culture’
George adds ‘It is a two way thing! Coming back after a year out it was great to meet Cody and the rest of the Buddy Network. It had a big impact … I’ve learnt so much’
As well as keeping in touch with each other the buddies they also set up WhatsApp group to arrange social events across the Buddy Network.
Do they have any advice to students considering getting involved in the scheme? George recommends ‘Put yourself forward and get involved – I wish I’d known about it earlier!’
