Buddy Case Study - Amy and Kherlen
Kherlen Bolorchulurn, from Mongolia, studying MBA Global came to DMU in January 2016. Before arriving in the UK she had registered with the i-Buddies Scheme and was matched with Amy Katiti from Kenya studying Pharmacy.
The pair were introduced at the International Welcome Event. What were Kherlen’s first impressions? ”I liked Amy immediately – she was so smiley!”
The buddies have not looked back and meet up at least once a week. Activities together have included cinema trips, cooking together, Laser tag, and visit to a local rugby match.
They also kept in contact with a group of students from Thailand, Ghana, India and Kenya they had met also at the Welcome Event. “We all clicked” Although the group are from different nationalities with different cultures “it has been like a bridge for us”
Amy’s thoughts on the i-Buddies scheme? “It has been completely different to expectations – in a good way – I was expecting to meet and help a new arrival but I’ve ended up making some really good friends”
Kherlen’s advice for new arrivals “Apply for an i-Buddy – it has helped me to settle into life in the UK. You will learn a lot from each other and have a wonderful experience!”
Amy recommends “Have an open mind and just go with the flow –you will learn more!”
DMU’s International Student Buddy Scheme matches newly arrived international students with existing DMU students to help them settle into their new life in Leicester.
We are currently looking for existing students to volunteer for the scheme for September 2016 – Find out more here.
