A GREAT festival on its way

Later in March more than 350 students and staff will be travelling to Hong Kong for an epic #DMUglobal adventure – but this is one with a special difference. The week-long trip coincides with the GREAT Festival of Innovation (21-24 March 2018), Britain’s flagship trade fair where the very best of UK creativity, design and innovation will be on show to the rest of the world. And DMU will be right at the centre of it all.

Over four days, the Festival will offer a series of thought-provoking and lively keynotes, masterclasses, showcases, installations and performances delivered by industry leaders, entrepreneurs, artists, educationalists and futurologists to an audience of guests from the UK, Hong Kong, China, Japan and the wider region. All of our students will get the opportunity to visit the festival, mainly on the final day.

As part of our second mass #DMUglobal trip of the year, students will also be taking part in 16 academic trips across all four faculties, deepening their subject knowledge and experiencing new cultures in one of the world’s most exciting cities.

How is DMU playing a leading role?

We’re proud to say that DMU is a leading partner in the festival as the only university to be taking part in all four days of the activities. The themes of the event are focussed on Work, Live, Play and Learn in a world that is changing rapidly in all of these areas. Our students and staff will play their part in the collaboration to unlock new ideas, technologies, markets and opportunities.

When and where will DMU be involved?

Although our staff and students will be participating in the festival across all four days, there are some highlights to look out for, including on Day 2 where DMU will be putting ‘Green Infrastructure in the City’ in the spotlight. DMU’s Dr Yuri Hadi will present his vision for a new type of high-rise living before our students Khanh (Ken) Nguyen and Thomas Cox demonstrate how their innovative concepts of sky-rise housing and farming could look through a large interactive display.

There will be several highlights on Day 4 with:

  • #DMUglobal and #DMUworks programmes demonstrating the value of providing students opportunities domestically and overseas to broaden skills and cultural horizons
  • DMU students showing how sky farming could be the answer to food security
  • The chance to experience immersive VR technology designed to revolutionise the way businesses present products
  • A fashion-forward catwalk show that brings Graduate Fashion Week to Hong Kong
  • An interactive cyber-attack to show how universities are at the forefront of fighting cybercrime.

Our students are eager to get out there for what promises to be an unforgettable trip. Business and Management student Rhianna Bailey said: “I’m really looking forward to going to Hong Kong to experience the culture and all the sightseeing.”

Summer Davidson, who studies Adult Nursing, said: “I’m most looking forward to going to see the temple, we have planned out our whole trip, we are so excited – I can’t wait!”
