DMUfreedom, our diversity and inclusion charter, sets out our commitment that at DMU, we believe that everyone should have the freedom to be, the freedom to inspire and the freedom to succeed.
As part of that commitment, we are delighted to be launching this new policy. 20 November is a particularly poignant day, marking Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day which each year commemorates and memorialises those who have lost their lives as a result of transphobia.
Increasing numbers of trans, gender-fluid and non-binary staff and students are choosing DMU because of our commitment to diversity and inclusivity. This policy provides a clear statement of the support we will provide, and the procedures staff should follow when supporting staff or students whose experienced gender is different from that assigned at birth.
The event will begin at 10.30am with speeches led by staff, students and DMU Executive Board member, Jo Cooke. There will be the opportunity to speak with the staff and student LGBT networks over tea and cake, and we will be inviting everybody to light a candle to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance, and to sign the #NoBystanders pledge against bullying and harassment.
