Keeping your bicycle safe

  • DMU staff who would like to borrow a cycle lock can contact Sustainability.
  • Use the campus cycle facilities, some of these are lockable.

  • Lock your cycle in an area covered by CCTV.

  • Use a decent cycle lock; generally the more expensive the better. We have found that many cheaper cable locks are not fit for purpose and are too easily cut. Good D-locks appear to perform better but you do get what you pay for.

  • Search for advice on good locks; look in particular for the Sold Secure rating.

  • Staff can borrow one of DMU’s cycle locks; these are Sold Secure Gold rated and we still have some available. Contact Sustainability for more informartion.

  • Learn how to lock your bike; ensure that you fill as much of the lock shackle as possible, don’t just lock the top-tube to the stand.

  • Remember that no cycle facility is 100% thief-proof; make sure your cycle is insured against theft whilst on campus.

  • Please report any suspicious behaviour around the cycle facilities to security and do not let anyone into the cycle sheds unless you are sure they should be in there.
