Outstanding Contribution to Research Excellence

Professor Jonathan Davies – Faculty of Business and Law

Professor Jonathan Davies established the Centre for Urban Research on Austerity (CURA) in 2015. It is the first such centre of its kind, investigating one of the most significant issues that affect the world.

The centre involves a multidisciplinary and multinational team approach, building links within and outside of DMU.

CURA has played an extremely important role in enhancing the reputation of the university as well as building research excellence across a group of staff and, in particular, supporting the development of junior academics.

An outstanding feature of the work of the centre is the interdisciplinary approach that engages across all areas of the university, from Architecture to Accountancy and Photography to Politics. It is a centre that touches the imagination of colleagues, building credible teams and harnessing the diverse talents that the university has to offer.

The centre has also been important in attracting and retaining staff at DMU. The work of CURA has great potential to make a significant and positive impact on society, and to challenge conventional wisdom and thinking about austerity within government. In this sense, CURA is very much in keeping with the wider mission and vision of the university, in particular the agenda for public good.
