Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

A health and wellbeing benefit is available for all staff and their dependants as employees of De Montfort University. The EAP offers you immediate access to 24 hour telephone counselling and legal and financial information services, provided by an independent health and wellbeing provider, Capita, and thereby extends the support that the university is able to offer. 


The EAP service is completely confidential and only statistical information relating to the usage of the service is passed to the University. All Capita consultants providing the service are bound by strict ethical codes of conduct and confidentiality. If you wish, you may remain anonymous when using the service.

To access these services at anytime, day or night, simply dial (0800 716 017, UK freephone) (if calling from a DMU Lync telephone quick dial is 0101), (calling from overseas +44 1455 254151), (minicom 0845 600 5499), state that you work for De Montfort University and tell Capita what you need help with. You’ll then be transferred to the most appropriate professional.

Also available is a range of online resources via the Capita website, www.employeecare.com| (type “DMU” into both the Access Code and Password login boxes).

CalmYou

This is a computer aided lifestyle management package which uses proven self-help tools to deal with common issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and insomnia. It is available 24 hours, 365 days a year. To access the resource, please click here| and then select the 'new user/Register here' box. Use the activation code g8teway.

Work-Life Balance

  • Flexible Working Policy

Our Flexible Working Policy| allows members of Professional Services staff the opportunity to make an application for flexible working arrangements. For instance, you may consider this to assist a balance between work, family life, personal commitments and commuting. If you are interested in learning more about Flexible Working at DMU please read the policy and speak to your Line Manager in the first instance. 

  • Parental Leave

Those contiuously employed by the University for a minimum period of one year who have parental responsibility for a child can apply to take a period of unpaid parental leave. The policy| clarifies an employee's entitlement to take parental leave, how long the leave period can be and provides guidance on actions to be taken when an employee makes a request for parental leave.

  • Maternity/Paternity/Adoption Leave

If you or your partner are expecting a baby and want to know more about your entitlements as a parent, the University's policy on maternity/paterntity/adoption leave| outlines everything you need to know.

  • Special Leave for Compassionate/Domestic Reasons

Intended to help employees with the problems arising from emergency situations (e.g. time off to care for dependents, bereavement). If you need to apply for special leave, please consult the relevant policy|.

Formerly the College and University Support Network (CUSN), Recourse is a charity dedicated to providing financial, emotional and practical support to staff working in the post-16 education sector.

Access to work

This is a scheme run by Jobcentre Plus to provide practical support and advice to disabled people and their employer to help overcome work related obstacles resulting from a disability. The practical support may include contributing to funds required towards making reasonable adjustments such as:

  • Adapting or providing new equipment you need at work
  • Adapting your working environment to meet your needs
  • Supporting your journey to work (this may include a personal support worker for your journey to and from work)
  • Having the support of a communicator/interpreter
