Life Sciences

A career in science is challenging, but the rewards are huge – you will be at the forefront of the latest medical discoveries and have the chance to help others.

DMU is home to internationally-excellent research which has the potential to change people’s lives around the world.

On the Life Sciences IYZ, you will be given a thorough grounding in human biology and chemistry to ensure you have the skills and expertise to continue your degree.

With access to the university’s state-of-the-art laboratories, you will study of how the body works and learn about the micro-organisms which cause infection as well as how disease is treated.

Expect to develop your scientific and critical skills as you begin your career in biomedical sciences at DMU.

Functions of Cells and Tissues

This module aims to introduce you to the basic concepts of anatomy, histology and physiology as an integrated experience of theory and laboratory observation. It provides a foundation to teaching that you encounter when you begin your studies at degree level. Topics covered include cellular anatomy, cellular function and how cells form tissues, the physiological function of tissues and the form and function of tissues.

Basic Microbiology for Biomedical Science

This module introduces you to aspects of fundamental microbiology required for the study of Biomedical Science and Medical Sciences at undergraduate level. You will learn the range, characteristics and properties of micro-organisms. These features are used to begin to discuss the importance of micro-organisms to man, particularly in relation to infection, disease and the control of micro-organisms.

Introductory Biochemistry

The aims of this module are to provide the fundamental aspects of introductory biochemistry necessary for an understanding of the specialised subjects when studying Medical or Biomedical Science programmes and underpins the biochemistry required by a range of courses offered by DMU. Basic biochemical processes and concepts relevant to disease and human health are explored.

Chemical Principles

This unit is designed to introduce you to basic chemical theories which underpin biological activity; the energy and thermodynamics of chemical systems; functional groups and their interconversion; the shapes of selected molecules and their stereochemical relationships and gain an understanding of complex compounds and ions.

Understanding Management*

The module provides an introduction to the field of management within organisations and will give you an appreciation of the roles and functions of managers within modern business enterprises.  The module content reflects the globalisation and considers the international nature of management.  You will also learn about nature and early theories of management, organisations and their structures and people management.
