Research and development

Government grants for research and development are available to help individuals and small to medium-sized businesses research and develop technologically innovative products and processes.

The following help is available:

Micro projects

Micro projects involve the initial proof of market development, this can include market research, competitor analysis and commercialisation planning of an innovative product or process.

A grant of up to £25k is available to businesses. Projects last no longer than 9 months.

Research projects

Research projects typically involve planned research or critical investigation to explore the technical feasibility and commercial potential of a new technology product or process.

A grant of up to £100k is available to businesses, and projects last up to 18 months.

Development projects

Development projects involve the shaping of industrial research into pre-production prototype of a technologically innovative product or industrial process, this includes pre-clinical studies.

A grant of up to £250k is available for businesses, and projects last up to 2 years.


De Montfort University provides support in applying for this programme, however, there are other funding options available.
