Basic Communication Skills for nurses and health care assistants

Overview

Communication is integral to the nurse-patient relationship and is one of six core values in nursing as identified in the government’s strategy to deliver high quality, compassionate care for patients (Department of Health, 2012).

Patients and their families can experience a whole range of emotions as they often receive complex and challenging information. Being able to communicate well with them and demonstrate empathy and a caring response is so important.

The aim of this one day course is to enhance the basic communication skills of nurses and health care assistants who work in cancer and haematology units.
