Happy 25th Birthday, DMU!

This week marked 25 years since De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) first came into existence.

In June 1992, Erasure were top of the UK charts, Disney’s Aladdin was the year’s box office smash, the first ever Premier League season was about to kick off and in the East Midlands, Leicester Polytechnic was about to evolve into DMU.

Under Prime Minister John Major, the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act had changed the way education was funded, allowing 35 polytechnics to become universities - one of those being DMU.

On the morning of 26 June 1992, Leicester Polytechnic officially became De Montfort University. It was the start of decades of development, as DMU grew into the university it is today.

25 YEARS 2

Two-and-a-half decades later and DMU is now recognised as one of the best in the country.  It has one of the country’s best-recognised community engagement programmes in #DMUlocal, it has provided thousands of students with epic overseas experiences through #DMUglobal and it has generations of students discover their potential and forge the career they want.
