De Montfort University acknowledges the existence of global warming caused by the use of fossil fuels. Energy and water have increased significantly in price  over the last few years and are expected to carry on increasing above the rate of inflation in the future. Expenditure on energy and water in  2008/09 is  estimated to be £2.3m. This is a  15% increase on the budget for 2007/08 and a 97% increase since 2003/04. In order to formalise the University’s response to global warming and increasing costs, the Energy Policy has been adopted. 

The Energy Policy recognises the environmental impact of energy and water usage due to the University’s activities and also the benefits of minimising that usage. The University is committed to reducing its use of energy and water. The Energy and Water Saving Policy is the means by which the University intends to manage its energy and water usage. This will be done by a combination of: 

• Management
• Purchasing
• Investment
• Awareness.   

The management of the Policy is the responsibility of the Estates Department. However it is everyone's responsibility to be aware of the effect of their activities on energy and water usage and to minimise those effects wherever possible. The Energy Policy encourages full participation of all students and members of staff in following and developing it.

We would encourage you to consider and minimise the effects of your everyday actions on the University's energy and water usage.
