University Articles of Government  

The Articles of Government include; the legal framework within which the institution is governed, the responsibilities of the Board of Governors, the Chief Executive, Academic Board and its committees, procedures for meetings of the Board of Governors, the appointment and conduct of staff and financial matters.

Business Continuity - Our Strategic Commitment  

De Montfort University intends to respond to any crisis with the minimum disruption to staff and students, and with the minimum disruption to the delivery to any services to internal and external customers.  Business Continuity - Our Strategic Commitment identifies our nine critical processes and our commitment to ensuring these processes are maintained. 

Crisis Management Plan  

This Plan provides the framework by which the University's Crisis Management Team will respond to a major incident.  It includes definitions, the structure of the Team, a system for crisis communications and lists available resources.

Students

Admissions  
This document sets out the policy that drives the DMU admissions decision making process, showing how it seeks to ensure fairness, transparency and consistency across the institution. It explains the value we place on various qualifications, the policy on applicants under age and for those with disabilities, how to issue feedback, how to deal with applicants with criminal convictions etc, and also contains the admissions regulations pertaining to applicants.

Student names
The policy covers, background on the use of names and name changes under UK law, how the names of individuals will be collected, stored and accessed by the University. It includes how to notify the organisation of change of name and any evidence of name that may be required. It provides guidance on name changing processes and conventions operating in the UK.

Student regulations
The General Regulations and Procedures Affecting Students explains the rules and regulations which apply to all DMU students including student discipline, payment of fees, examination regulations, extenuating circumstances, academic appeals and health and safety policy

The Handbook and Regulations for undergraduate awards explains the regulations for the University’s undergraduate degree schemes, including programme structure, scheme management, assessment and progression and assessment of final award and classification

The Taught Postgraduate Programmes, University Regulations explains the regulations for the University’s taught postgraduate degree schemes, including programme structure, scheme management, assessment and progression and assessment of final award

Students’ rights and responsibilities: our shared expectations
At DMU we aim to promote a culture where everyone is treated with respect.  We all need to acknowledge and celebrate our successes and take responsibility for, and learn from, our mistakes.  If we embrace these values, all members of our community will have the opportunity to develop as individuals and to benefit from a positive university experience.

To help us foster this community spirit and co-operative approach, DMU has a number of formal statements which set out what you can expect from the university, and what expectations are placed on you.

Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy  
De Montfort University Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy for 2007 – 2012 builds upon strategic principles namely, the need to support students in the transition to Higher Education; a varied learning, teaching and assessment diet; programme integrity; employability and creativity; and inclusivity and diversity. Each Faculty is responsible for producing its own set of annual learning and teaching priorities  within the framework provided by the University LTAS.

Culture
This policy articulates the role of the University in enriching the cultural life of students, staff and the wider community.

Religious activities on Campus  
This statement sets out the University’s code of practice on religious activities and practices on campus, and should be read as a form of guidance for students and staff.

Freedom of speech  
This Code of Practice sets out the rights and obligations inherent within the principle of freedom of speech and shall be construed and applied in a spirit of upholding the principle of freedom of speech wherever reasonably possible within the existing Legal framework.

Forced Marriages Advice and Guidance
If you are worried you might be forced into marriage or are worried about a friend or relative, then confidential advice and guidance is available from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Victims of Forced Marriage Unit via their website http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/when-things-go-wrong/forced-marriage/information-for-victims.  The Forced Marriage Unit can also be contacted by phone on 0207 008 0151.

Public interest disclosure  
This Policy is designed to comply with the Employment Rights Act 1996, as amended by the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998, as amended and interpreted by the Courts from time to time. The Act encourages workers to disclose information through appropriate internal channels and protects staff who raise concerns about malpractice as long as they satisfy conditions contained in the Act.

This procedure details the process for appealing against dismissal and the rights and responsibilities of employees who appeal.

Estate Management

Energy
The Energy Policy recognises the environmental impact of energy and water usage due to the University’s activities and also the benefits of minimising that usage. The University is committed to reducing its use of energy and water. The Energy and Water Saving Policy is the means by which the University intends to manage its energy and water usage.

Environmental policy
The policy articulates how the University operates to minimising any adverse effects of its activities on the environment at local, regional, national and global level.

Waste management  
The policy covers the processes in place to continuously improve the management of waste, and to take every opportunity to minimise waste and materials no longer required. It covers reducing waste at source, re-use and repair, recycling and responsibilities for disposal.

Car parking policy  
The policy applies to all employees and students at DMU as well as all visitors and external individuals and organisations using DMU's car parks. It relates to all DMU car parks, and is operational between 08:30 am and 5:00 pm Mondays to Fridays.

Cleaning policy  
The policy covers the aims and objectives of the service, key customers, hours of operation and procurement of materials. 

Security  
The Policy formalises a cohesive and integrated approach to security throughout the University. It covers the security of people and University assets. The ; Crime prevention, Access control, Asset protection, Vehicle parking and the use of CCTV.

Finance

Anti fraud policy  
To ensure resources are used for their intended purpose of providing higher education, it is essential that losses due to fraud and corruption are minimised. This Anti-Fraud Policy outlines the University’s commitment to creating an anti-fraud culture

Risk management  
This document sets out the policy and framework that DMU operates in order to ensure compliance with the HEFCE Accounts Direction.

Marketing

UG Marketing Strategy 2008 – 2010: Executive Summary  
The volatile environment in which UK universities are operating is forcing a step change in marketing and recruitment activities. De Montfort University needs to make changes to its approach in reaching and attracting students to study at undergraduate level. The strategy sets out the key changes that will be implemented over the next few years.

Information security

Data protection  
This is a statement of the ways in which the University will meet obligations to manage the personal data of those with whom it comes into contact within the framework of the Data Protection Act.

Email  
De Montfort University supports the appropriate and proper use of the Internet, email, and related services and facilities. The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all users are aware of their responsibilities when employing email and De Montfort University procedures for dealing with inappropriate use.

Freedom of information
The policy of the organisation relating to compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 and the requirements to provide a publication scheme and to process requests made within the terms of the Act.

Information security  
This document provides an overview of the policy and regulation framework employed to manage the information assets of the organisation. They are provided to ensure that users are able to appreciate the implications of their actions. The policies and regulations apply to every user of De Montfort University systems and services.

Network security  
The purpose of this document is to define the University policy for controlling access to electronic information using network features. Systems and PCs are outside the scope of this document.

Remote access (IT)  
The purpose of this policy is to ensure that all users understand their role and responsibilities when taking University data and equipment off site and accessing DMU networks and systems from remote locations. It is designed to minimise the potential exposure to the University from damage that may result from unauthorised use of University resources.

Software licensing  
The purpose of this policy is to protect the University from damage due to legal proceedings being sued for breach of contract protect the reputation of the organisation ensure good value for money and provide appropriate levels of service.

Records management

Records disposal  
The policy outlines the purpose and practice of proper disposal of University records. The policy applies to all records created, received and maintained by staff of the institution in the course of carrying out their corporate functions. Records and documentation created in the course of research, whether internally or externally funded are also subject to contractual record keeping requirements.

Records retention  
This policy outlines the framework for establishing retention periods and managing the retention of documents to meet corporate and legal requirements.

Research records retention  
This policy addresses the creation maintenance and disposal of research records. It applies primarily to funded projects but it is god practice to follow the principles outlined in relation to the conduct of any research.
