Ian Blatchford MA (Oxon) MA (Birkbeck) FCMA FSA
Director and Chief Executive, The Science Museum Group
Mr Ian Blatchford joined the Board of Governors at DMU in September 2010 and uses his breadth of expertise in corporate finance and communications to advise the university. He took over as Chair of the Board at the end of July 2011. Ian is also a Pro Chancellor of the university, participating in key ceremonial events throughout the academic year.
Ian studied law at Mansfield College, University of Oxford, and also holds an MA in Renaissance Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London. Ian is the Director of The Science Museum Group, which oversees the Science Museum and other related museums.
He started his career working as a Graduate Trainee at the Bank of England and then a Corporate Finance Executive at merchant bankers Barclays de Zoete Wedd. He then joined the Arts Council as its Deputy Finance Director, before moving to the marketing and design agency, Cricket Communications, working in the position of Financial Controller. In 1996, he joined the Royal Academy of Arts as the Director of Finance.
In April 2002, Ian joined the Victoria and Albert Museum as Director of Finance and Resources. He then became its Deputy Director in December 2004. He left to be Director of the National Museum of Science and Industry (now The Science Museum Group) in October 2010.
Ian was awarded the Pushkin Medal in 2015. In April 2017, Ian became Chair of the National Museum Director’s Council. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and is also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
