Sustainable Campus

De Montfort University (DMU) has led the way in sustainable building design since the opening of the Queens Building in 1993, right through to the energy efficient Hugh Aston Building, which opened in 2009.

We are continually updating our buildings and surroundings to keep up with the latest technologies and our half-hourly monitoring ensures that our systems are as efficient as they can be.

Environmental management and energy efficiency

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities and to cutting our carbon emissions across our campus. We have installed half-hourly metering across all our buildings, which, combined with our staff and student engagement through projects such as Green Impact and Student Switch Off, is already delivering reductions in energy use.

The Living Lab

This pioneering experiment will use state-of-the-art techniques to turn the Queens Building into a centre for sustainable excellence. DMU is partnering with companies including Pick Everard to develop and implement the latest sustainable technologies in a living example of what green creativity and research can do.

Hugh Aston Building

The newest building on the DMU campus is also the most energy efficient. Thanks to features including heat-absorbing materials, ground-source heat pumps and natural daylight, the design was rated ‘excellent’ by the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM).

As well as creating new energy efficient buildings, we are refurbishing older buildings with the very latest technology, including insulation and solar energy.

Flagship projects include the Living Lab and a project with Leicester City Council to fully refurbish a Victorian terraced house and monitor the results.
