Nursing and Midwifery
With more than 50 years’ experience in delivering high quality professional education to our diverse studentship, the School of Nursing and Midwifery helps students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to improve health and patient care.
We offer a diverse range of courses for nurses, midwives and healthcare professionals at undergraduate and postgraduate level;including a suite of specialist Learning Beyond Registration opportunities for experienced professionals.
Our courses are professionally accredited, approved or highly commended by the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for effective partnership with trust colleagues, and excellent work around patient and public involvement; ensuring our graduates qualify with a relevant and recognised qualification.
- 100 per cent of our nursing and midwifery graduates are successful in gaining employment or enrolling in further study within six months of completing their course (DLHE report 2014/15)
- Registered nurses and midwives can expect to start on a salary of more than £21,909 (NHS pay scales 2016/17)
Most of our academic and research staff within the school are registered nurses and midwives with designated link areas in practice, which enables them to keep in contact with students and staff when on clinical placements. Some of the teaching team participate in new nursing and midwifery initiatives, whilst others are undertaking PhD research projects or writing textbooks with a good national reputation.
Learning Beyond Registration (post reg)
We offer a diverse range of Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) courses and standalone modules (at undergraduate and postgraduate level) that are accredited by the NMC and in some cases the HCPC, and have been designed to suit a range of training needs from experienced, registered professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and career prospects.

Preparing for caring
Nurses are in a unique position within the healthcare provision, and can work in a wide variety of settings. Nursing involves caring for individuals, families and communities in order to maintain levels of good health.
A midwife is a health professional who supports women during pregnancy labour and the postnatal period as an autonomous practitioner. Pregnancy and birth are unique experiences, and a mother always remembers her midwife. DMU runs a number of programmes and modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level which support the midwife in her practice.
Learning Beyond Registration this provision has been developed through the university's partnerships with the Health Education East Midlands Local Education Training Board and colleagues from a wide range of specialities within the acute, primary care and independent healthcare sectors.
MSc in Renal Nursing
Delivered in partnership with the Fatima College of Health Sciences in Abu Dhabi, the 18 month part-time MSc Renal Nursing is designed to enable experienced renal nurses who wish to advance their knowledge and skills in their specialist practice domain.
The Leicestershire and Rutland Hospice (LOROS) and De Montfort University have worked collaboratively for many years and together established the Centre for the Promotion of Excellence in Palliative Care (CPEP) in 2012. CPEP demonstrates both organisations commitment to enhance the delivery of holistic, person-centred, evidence-based palliative care across all care settings.
