If you are driven to meet the individual health and social needs of people with a learning disability and want to have an interesting and exciting career, then this is the field of practice for you.

On our BSc Nursing you will learn and develop both practical and theoretical skills in order to achieve your full potential as a learning disability nurse and meet the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards. These include professional values professional values; communication and interpersonal skills; nursing practice and decision making; and leadership, management and team working. As well as people who have a learning disability, you will also learn how to respond to the needs of all patients and service users from all fields of nursing including adult, child and mental health.

Many of the people you meet, who have a learning disability, will also have social needs, and accordingly an Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities (RNLD) needs to be adaptable and readily apply their expertise across both health and social care.

In contemporary society, Learning Disability nurses enjoy a diverse range of career pathways and opportunities. While you are a student at DMU you will experience a diverse range of placements in the local area and have the opportunity to undertake an elective experience in the UK or Internationally. Postgraduate and Learning beyond registration

Postgraduate students have the opportunity to focus their studies on Learning Disability practice and research through our independent studies modules. These modules are available at 15 and 30 credits available at Masters level.

Whilst Learning Beyond Registration (LBR) offers the opportunity for practising healthcare professionals to continue their professional development through our range of Post Registration programmes and modules, which are accredited and validated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
