Providing opportunities for personal and professional development

Pharmacy has been taught at our current location in De Montfort University’s Hawthorn Building for more than 100 years and we have gained a reputation for producing graduates of the highest calibre.

Our MPharm undergraduate curriculum is specifically designed to prepare pharmacists for their developing role in providing healthcare through both community and hospital pharmacy, while retaining a strong science foundation.

We also provide a well-established postgraduate clinical pharmacy programme for pharmacists by distance learning. The BSc (Hons) Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science is designed for students intending to enter those industries and many of our graduates have pursued very successful careers in these sectors.

A recent addition to our undergraduate programmes is forensic science, which provides training in a wide range of laboratory skills and forensic techniques and opens up employment opportunities for graduates in a number of scientific areas.

Our newest courses are the specialist MSc in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and the MSc in Pharmaceutical Quality by Design.

Students are taught in our recently refurbished facilities, which include specialist laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment.
The school has a very active research programme in diverse areas related to pharmacy and related subjects.

Our research was rated as internationally significant in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. All research carried out in the school informs our teaching so that students benefit from the latest developments in their field of study.

Pharmacy Courses

Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic Science|

This course is focused on converting ‘raw’ drugs into dosage forms that are safe for patients.

The course has a high practical content, hands-on experience and opportunities for a one-year industrial sandwich placement.

It is aimed at those who wish to establish a career in the pharmaceutical or cosmetic industries.

MPharm|

As a pharmacy student you will learn about aspects of medicine development and use, looking at the issues surrounding drug development and formulation, how medicines interact with the body and the complex ethical issues and laws governing the dispensing and supply of medicines to patients.

Our students can apply for membership of the British Pharmaceutical Students Association, which represents the student sector of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

Forensic Science|

Our dedicated BSc (Hons) Forensic Science is designed and taught by forensic scientists, academics and crime scene investigators.

This course teaches you the techniques of biological and physical sciences that are employed at a scene of crime and in analytical work in forensic laboratories.

You will also learn about crime scene processing, forensic IT and the criminal justice system.

Continuing Professional Development for Pharmacists|

The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences has opportunities for research degrees and continuing professional development in clinical pharmacy, medicines management, supplementary prescribing, pharmaceutical sciences and many other topics.
