Collaboration with Leicester's Curve Theatre
Our collaboration with the Curve Theatre has given our students the opportunity to work with professional directors in a world-class setting. Designed by world renowned architect Rafael Viñoly the theatre lies at the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter.
As part of our association with the Curve Theatre|, Drama Studies students recently performed in two plays, Greek and East, by iconic British playwright Steven Berkoff. Under the directorship of Curve’s Associate Director, Adel Al-Salloum, and Artistic Director, Paul Kerryson, the project provided an exciting opportunity for our students to work on challenging theatrical texts within a professional context.
Final year Drama student Toni Martell, and MA Drama student Natalie Raven were also able to gain valuable experience as assistant directors.
Head of the School, Rob Brannen, said: “We are delighted that our BA Drama students will be working with such highly regarded directors within this professional theatre context. This is a wonderful opportunity for this student group to gain first hand experience of Curve, Leicester’s state-of-the-art performance facility. We are looking forward to similar exciting theatre performance collaborations in the future between Curve and DMU.”
Adel Al-Salloum, director of Greek and Head of Participation and Learning at Curve, said: "We are thrilled to be working in association with DMU on this project. Paul [Kerryson, Curve Artistic Director] and I are privileged to working with local, emerging acting talent and offering them the opportunity to perform at Curve."
Several students also gained valuable behind-the-scenes experience alongside Curve’s professional production team.
Drama Studies students have also been cast in an adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials and recently our students performed in the first production 3AM by Curve's Young Company, a show inspired by the physical energy and boldness of graphic novels and features a rich mix of individual stories, entwined in an urban landscape. This original piece was devised by 27 young people, under the guidance of the professional creative team at Curve.
