DMU's just the job for our Technology graduates

Faculty of Technology graduates have walked into jobs with some of the UK's biggest companies after collecting their degrees at De Montfort University Leicester (DMU).

Hewlett Packard, IBM, the NHS and British Telecom were among the firms who have snapped up our students, with others landing roles with city firms, setting off for internships abroad or preparing for further study.

INSET Thurs grads

Thursday's ceremonies saw students from the School of Computer Science and Informatics, the School of Engineering and Sustainable Development and Leicester Media School  celebrate the end of years of hard work.

Mechanical Engineering graduate Francis Happi said: “It’s been amazing. An amazing four years at DMU. The ceremony was really wonderful.”

Media Production graduates Mohammed Ali and Joey Alderson have already landed freelance work with a Nottingham company on the strength of work done in their course.

Mohammed said: “We have set up as freelance and producing corporate videos. It’s exciting to be graduating and to have got work straight away. Great course.”

The first cohort of DMU’s Business Informatics, developed with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, graduated with everyone gaining a 2:1 or above.

The degree, now Business Information Systems, is developed in partnership with HP who are closely involved in the course, offering placements and guest lectures to students.

Memory Madziire managed to juggle her studies with being a mum of three. Her proud family were there to see her graduate. “It has been crazy, but I’m glad I’m here,” she laughed. “It has been exciting, I’ve enjoyed DMU a lot even though it’s been hard work.”

Memory’s placement year was spent working in IT for the NHS in Northamptonshire, and she is all set to start a new job on Monday, working for SPS Technology in Leicester.

Chiedza Nyatsambo spent a year working in Warner Bros UK headquarters in London. “I had a great experience,” she said. “I was part of their tech solutions team and working somewhere like Warner Bros. was an amazing opportunity. It’s a very good course. It is so varied.”

INSET grads thurs 2

Classmate Kieron Hunt has landed a job working for Hewlett Packard in the London office following a successful placement.

Laura Whetton got a First in Information and Communication Technology and is now starting another degree – this time for a PGCE certificate. She hopes to teach computing at secondary school. “I’ve only just finished this and I’m starting another course in September, this time for a year. I love the subject and teaching seemed the natural next step.”

Caitrin Burrows, who graduated in Forensic Computing, is off to China for an internship. “I’m off in a week, and then when I come back I have a job at IBM in Leicester, working in their client innovation centre.”

She was celebrating with course mate Mary Geddes, who said: “We have had a great four years here. We even got to write and publish research papers which we presented at a conference in London.”
