Media students get behind the scenes at New York's NBC

Lights, camera, action! Students from De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) got to see some of New York’s most famous programmes being recorded on a tour of the Big Apple’s largest TV studios.

Journalism, Media and Media Production students were at NBC Studios which is home to Saturday Night Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Today and Late Night with Seth Meyers.

The studios, based at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, were the first TV production studios in New York. Students saw the TV production process at work from the writers, producers and anchors.

For Media Production students Dom Whiting, Jack Stevens and Josh Palmer-Smith it was the perfect opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at NBC, which began life in the 1930s as Radio City Studios.

Dom said: “This is my first time in New York and I think it will be the first of many visits.

“This is what we love! It’s an experience it’s going to be hard to pick out the highlights, we are just determined to pack as much in as we can and to make the most of it.”

Jack added: “For us as Media Production students this is just the best trip. It’s a great opportunity to see some of the biggest programmes being recorded.”

The Media Production group has also been visiting the International Centre of Photography to see how images have been used to record historic moments and the changing role of photography in society.

One of the current exhibitions looks at the difference between the “official” press photography of Obama’s Presidential campaign and those taken by supporters on his campaign trail.
